WHEELING, W.Va. – March 12, 2024 – Entrepreneurs, small business owners, and community members with big ideas for Wheeling now have the opportunity to bring their vision to life. Wheeling Heritage is accepting applications for the next Show of Hands, a high-energy crowdfunding event that provides funding and exposure to local projects. The event will take place on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at 6 p.m. on the third floor of the Wheeling Artisan Center, 1400 Main Street.

Applications are open through Friday, April 11, and can be submitted at wheelingheritage.org/show-of-hands.

What is Show of Hands? Sponsored by Orrick, Show of Hands is a community-driven event where four finalists present their ideas to a live audience, who then vote to decide which project will receive funding. The winner typically receives upwards of $4,000 in prize money, made possible through sponsorships and audience contributions. With this event, Show of Hands will exceed $150,000 in total funding awarded, supporting local businesses and initiatives that have contributed to Wheeling’s economic growth for over a decade.

Why Apply? Beyond funding, Show of Hands offers valuable exposure, networking opportunities, and community support. Finalists gain the chance to showcase their projects in front of a diverse audience, including potential customers, investors, and collaborators. Additionally, each of the four finalists will have the opportunity to work with a mentor on refining their presentation skills, plus receive a professionally produced 90-second video highlighting their business and project.

2. Pitch Your Idea: Finalists will present their projects at the event on May 21. Each has four minutes to pitch, followed by a brief Q&A session.
3. Audience Votes: Attendees contribute a $5 donation at the door, adding to the prize pool, and vote for their favorite idea.
4. Winner Announced: The project with the most votes wins the funding and community backing.

WHEELING, W.Va. – March 3, 2025 – Wheeling Heritage has awarded seven Partnership Grants to local organizations, supporting projects that celebrate arts, culture, and community engagement. A total of $6,675 in funding was distributed to events and initiatives that will take place or be completed this year.

Grant recipients include:

• Foxfire Film Festival – In partnership with Oglebay Institute’s Towngate Theatre, the festival honors West Virginia’s cultural heritage through storytelling. Funding will support the production of a promotional video to help generate funds for the November 2025 festival.
• Centre Market’s “Saturdays at the Market” – A live music series featuring local musicians performing from 12-2 p.m. on Saturdays, May 24 through Sept. 27. The series provides artists with a welcoming platform to showcase their talents.
• Ohio County Solid Waste Authority’s Earth Day Block Party – A community event that brings together artists, musicians, craftsmen, and local organizations to promote environmental awareness and sustainability.
• The Friendlier City Project’s Programming – A one-day celebration in June featuring vendors and entertainment celebrating the Friendlier City of Wheeling. The event, which draws thousands of attendees annually, will use grant funding to support programming and logistics.
• Glass Takes Over Wheeling – A citywide celebration of Wheeling’s glassmaking heritage, featuring exhibitions and events highlighting the city’s rich history in glass production. Events are planned throughout April 2025.
• Bullfrogs and Butterflies – A children’s consignment shop in Elm Grove that will use funding to replace aging display racks and work tables, improving organization and customer experience.
• Ohio Valley Trail Partners’ Heritage Trail Tour – The 18th annual tour of the Wheeling Heritage Trail, offering 10-, 30-, and 62-mile ride options. The event, held on Sunday, May 25, supports trail maintenance, improvements, and advocacy efforts.

“I am grateful to the Partnership Grant Committee made up of Wheeling Heritage Board members and community partners that help us in choosing these projects that will benefit from our support. WHEELING, W.Va. – Feb. 25, 2025 – Wheeling Heritage and the Regional Economic Development Partnership (RED) are now accepting applications for the next cohort of CO.STARTERS, a 10-week program designed to help entrepreneurs and small business owners turn their ideas into actionable business plans.

The program will take place on Monday evenings from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Wheeling Artisan Center, beginning March 17. The application deadline is March 10, or until 12 participants are enrolled, and the participation fee is $200, which includes program materials. Payment plans are available upon request. Interested individuals can apply at redp.org/costarters.

Thanks to funding from the Women’s Giving Circle, a Community Foundation for the Ohio Valley initiative, partial fee assistance will be available for women entrepreneurs participating in the upcoming cohort. Additionally, we are grateful to the Truist Charitable Fund for their support of programming assistance.

“Since 2018, more than 90 entrepreneurs have completed the CO.STARTERS program in Wheeling, many of whom had no prior business training or experience,” said Valerie Piko, program development manager at RED. “We’ve seen tremendous success with this program, and I’m excited to offer it again. Graduates leave with the tools to turn their dreams into reality. This program also serves as a resource for existing business owners who may feel stuck. No matter how long you’ve been in business, sometimes you need to step back and work on your business rather than in your business.”

CO.STARTERS connects participants with experienced entrepreneurs and startup experts to guide them through a practical, hands-on business modeling process. Instead of developing a traditional business plan, participants test and refine small-scale models based on real-time customer feedback. This approach helps entrepreneurs identify market needs, avoid costly mistakes, and build a sustainable foundation for their businesses.

WHEELING, W.Va. – January 15, 2025– Wheeling Heritage, in partnership with the Ohio County Cemeteries Foundation, will host a book sale on Saturday, January 25, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the first floor of the Wheeling Artisan Center. Proceeds from the sale will support the ongoing restoration of Mount Wood Cemetery, which was established in 1848 and has seen significant improvements in 2024.

“We’re excited to continue the momentum from 2024 and make even more progress on the preservation efforts at Mount Wood Cemetery,” said Scott Schenerlein, executive director of Wheeling Heritage. “This book sale is a great way for the community to support this important historic site while finding their next great read.”

Jay Frey, president of the Ohio County Cemeteries Foundation, added, “Rantiff Services, LLC spent two full days restoring larger monuments in July and October. Their work was paid for from the Mt. Wood Cemetery Fund at the Community Foundation for the Ohio Valley. Eleven monuments were reassembled, among them some of the largest, heaviest and most prominent in the cemetery. The visual impact is significant. The book sale will help replenish the funds we spent.”

A workshop on cemetery mapping and documentation will be presented by Cemeteries Foundation volunteers Laura Dawson and Penny McConnell midday during the book sale. The event is free and open to the public, with all proceeds benefiting the restoration of Mount Wood Cemetery. WHEELING, W.Va. – January 6, 2025 – Wheeling Heritage is now accepting applications for its Partnership Grant Program through January 31, 2025. The nonprofit organization offers these grants to support projects that align with its mission of revitalizing Wheeling through historic preservation, community development, and the arts.

Partnership grants are reviewed quarterly by an ad-hoc committee that evaluates each application to ensure the proposed project aligns with the program’s goals. Grants of up to $1,000 are available, funding up to 75% of direct project costs.

Wheeling Heritage offers five types of partnership grants in the following categories:

• Education & Interpretation Grant: Funds projects that support the heritage area, interpret its historic significance, and provide long-term community benefits.
• Small Business Development Grant: Available to organizations or small businesses for projects that contribute to Wheeling’s economic vitality.
• Artist Grant: Supports projects such as supplies, recordings, studio time, exhibits, performances, and attendance at workshops or seminars.
• Recreation Grant: Funds projects or programs that enhance recreation within the heritage area, with priority given to projects along the trail system.
• Fairs & Festivals Grant: Supports events within the heritage area that advance Wheeling’s culture and history, from community-based celebrations to large-scale events.

Applicants may provide their matching share in dollars or through in-kind services. Individuals, community groups, local institutions, public entities, and private enterprises are eligible to apply. Nonprofit status is not required, but applicants must demonstrate the capacity to manage and account for funds responsibly.
