AmeriCorps Member Opportunity Opens with Wheeling Heritage
WHEELING, W.Va. – June 30, 2023 – Wheeling Heritage seeks a full-time Preserve WV AmeriCorps member to join their team, focusing on cultural heritage tourism. This position will develop research-based, historical pieces for Weelunk, along with the development and implementation of engaging history-based education programs for Wheeling Heritage.
The position is available through the Preservation Alliance of West Virginia, who administers the Preserve WV AmeriCorps Program. Preserve WV AmeriCorps is a statewide national service initiative where AmeriCorps members help main streets thrive, cultivate cultural heritage tourism, and preserve beloved West Virginia history. Being an AmeriCorps member is neither employment nor volunteering. It is a unique paid National Service opportunity similar to the Peace Corps.
“We’re excited to host this AmeriCorps position for another year to help support the work that we do here at Wheeling Heritage,” said Alex Panas, program manager for Wheeling Heritage. “The last few years, our AmeriCorps members were solely focused on providing history-based content for Weelunk, our online magazine. This year, we’re diversifying the role to also include some public history programming. We’re excited to see who applies and encourage anyone with a background or interest in public history, writing or program planning to apply.”
Daily tasks of this AmeriCorps position will include conducting archival and primary source research to support new program development and Weelunk articles. The goal of this position is to produce one to two Weelunk articles per month including identifying photos to accompany the articles and developing creative multimedia content and producing approximately two programs per quarter.
Along with contributing content to Weelunk, previous Wheeling Heritage AmeriCorps members have conducted surveys of our historic neighborhoods, created walking tours, and preserved cemeteries. The service term typically begins in September and works as a full-time member of the team for 12 months.
Full-time AmeriCorps members receive an annual stipend, along with workers compensation insurance. AmeriCorps members will also receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award upon successful completion of their term of service. This award can be used for tuition at most colleges, technical, and vocational schools, or for the repayment of qualified, federal student loans.
