Wheeling Heritage Invites Artists to Explore the Strange, Mysterious and Unexpected
WHEELING, W.Va. – August 24 2026 – Wheeling Heritage is calling on local artists to embrace the unusual for its upcoming exhibition, Arcana: A Gallery of the Strange, Mysterious and Unexpected. The exhibition invites artists to interpret the theme through their own creative lens and welcomes all artistic mediums to showcase work inspired by the curious and unconventional spirit of the season. The artwork will be on display Oct. 6 through Nov. 6 at the Wheeling Artisan Center Gallery.
Artists are to submit original work for consideration by Sept. 11. Submission guidelines and additional information are available at https://wheelingheritage.org/upcoming-exhibits.
“Arcana refers to objects that are strange, secret, and mysterious. The intention of this exhibit is to invoke a sense of specialized knowledge, hidden rules, or obscure practices. Since West Virginia and the entire Appalachian region are steeped in such arcane folklore, we’re really looking for local artists to lean into the more eerie, historic, and literary side of the Halloween season this year,” said Ellery McGregor, director of programming at Wheeling Heritage.
An opening reception for Arcana will be held Tuesday, Oct. 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Wheeling Artisan Center Gallery, located on the first floor at 1400 Main St. The reception is free and open to the public.
The gallery hours are Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with evening hours available for special events.
Wheeling Heritage curates several exhibitions throughout the year as part of its mission to support local artists, provide opportunities to showcase their work and contribute to Wheeling’s vibrant arts and cultural scene.
