Wheeling Heritage to Accept Applications for the Wheeling Historic Revitalization Subgrant Program
WHEELING, W.Va. – July 18, 2022 – Wheeling Heritage is now accepting applications for the Wheeling Historic Revitalization Subgrant Program. This new program was designed to support the rehabilitation and restoration projects of Wheeling’s Historic buildings.
Selected by The National Park Service, Wheeling Heritage was one of 11 national recipients awarded a $750,000 Paul Bruhn Historic Revitalization Grant in 2021. The funding from this program will provide preservation assistance to downtown commercial redevelopment and catalytic neighborhood projects in urban neighborhoods that meet each project’s requirements. Subgrants will be awarded anywhere from $15,000 to $100,000 to rehab and repair commercial, residential and mixed-use structures. Wheeling Heritage has identified more than 3,000 structures that could be eligible for support through this subgrant program.
“We are very pleased to be able to administer this program,” said Betsy Sweeny, Wheeling Heritage’s Director of Heritage Programming. “So often federal funds pose major barriers for local applicants, through this subgrant program, Wheeling Heritage is able to act as the intermediary, and assemble local reviewers that can best assess local projects.”
To be eligible for this grant, buildings must either be individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places, or listed as a contributing building in a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places. Applicants will be required to submit a detailed plan and project narrative through an online application, including demonstrating a 25% matching share for their project. Each project may only receive funding from this grant once, however, the same developer may apply for more than one building. If a project does not receive funding, the developer may apply again during the next round of applications.
Applications will be accepted twice annually with the first application opening through Oct. 1. An advisory committee has been selected to review and evaluate applications after the closure date. All funds will be awarded over the next three years.
