Dimmeydale to be Nominated to the National Register of Historic Places
WHEELING, W.Va. – June 24, 2022 – The neighborhood of Dimmeydale will be nominated to become nationally recognized as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places. Dimmeydale had previously been surveyed by Heritage Architectural Associates of Wheeling to determine if it qualified for nomination.
Dimmeydale underwent a detailed survey to document all of the structures in the area to see if the neighborhood would qualify. Once the survey was complete, it was determined that Dimmeydale merited a nomination. Wheeling Heritage will enter into a contract with Heritage Architectural Associates to create and submit the nomination.
A historic district is a designation of a group of buildings that together form a historically or architecturally significant area. When a neighborhood is listed as a historic district, it does not have any restrictions or protections on the properties. It does provide an opportunity for incentives when the area is designated. Buildings that are deemed contributing to the historic district will qualify for incentives such as historic tax credits.
“Being part of a historic district has no downside. It opens the door for preservation incentives and sheds a positive light on the community.” said Betsy Sweeny, Wheeling Heritage Director of Heritage Programming.
This project has been made possible through Survey and Planning Grants from the State Historic Preservation Office, provided to Wheeling Heritage in partnership with the Wheeling Historic Landmarks Commission.
