Focus Areas

We work to preserve and enhance all the resources that make Wheeling unique. Because without the assets that make Wheeling special, we’d be like any other city. Whether we’re working with developers or public officials, our work aligns with this common theme for the greater good of the entire community.

We built the award-winning riverfront amphitheater, Heritage Port, and we hold family friendly events on Heritage Trail to engage and connect our community with the Ohio River.

We developed the Artisan Center, a renovated industrial building with a three-story atrium in the heart of downtown.  We are spearheading a grassroots restoration of Mt. Wood Cemetery, Wheeling’s oldest extant cemetery.

As the manager of the city’s Main Street program, we focus on community and business development, city planning and public art to create a more vibrant, engaged community.

Impact

From 2014-2016, Wheeling National Heritage Area has generated $86.6 million in economic impact, supported 1,109 jobs, and generated $6.4 million in tax revenue.

 

We do this by providing and facilitating grants and capital funding to support projects that restore historic buildings, investing in our community, and ensuring cultural and historical programming promotes the heritage of the Wheeling region.

 

But a lot of our work isn’t quantifiable, like our knowledge sharing, collaborative partnerships, and various projects that increase the quality of life in Wheeling.
