“New Traditions” Exhibit: Bridging Appalachia’s Past and Present Through Art
Wheeling Heritage and YNST Magazine are pleased to announce the opening of the “New Traditions” Exhibit at the newly renovated Wheeling Artisan Center Gallery to celebrate the region’s diverse culture and historic arts and craft practices of Appalachia. The opening reception for the “New Traditions” exhibit will take place on Friday, May 17, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Wheeling Artisan Center Gallery (1400 Main Street, Wheeling). Admission is free, and attendees can come and enjoy the Appalachian-inspired artwork.
“New Traditions” will celebrate the region’s diverse culture and historic arts and craft practices by viewing them with a contemporary lens. Whether it be utilizing traditional techniques with new materials, incorporating or reimagining Appalachian craft, or simply using modern methods to tell the story of the past — this show highlights the connectivity and fusion of the region’s then and now.
Artists of all experience levels and mediums are invited to submit their work for consideration. Submissions should align with one or both of the following categories: traditional Appalachian arts and crafts viewed through a contemporary lens or pieces inspired by the history and legacy of Appalachian culture. The deadline for submissions is April 25. To apply, go to https://wheelingheritage.org/gallery-application/.
In addition to the exhibition, high school students from Ohio County are invited to participate in a writing competition inspired by “New Traditions.” Students can attend the opening reception on May 17 and submit a review of the show by May 24 for a chance to have their work published and receive a stipend.
