AmeriCorps Member Opportunity Opens with Wheeling Heritage
WHEELING, W.Va. – August 2, 2022 – Wheeling Heritage seeks a full-time Preserve WV AmeriCorps member to join their team, focusing on cultural heritage tourism. This position will develop research-based, historical pieces for Weelunk.com.
The position is available through the Preservation Alliance of West Virginia, who administers the Preserve WV AmeriCorps Program. Preserve WV AmeriCorps is a statewide national service initiative where AmeriCorps members help main streets thrive, cultivate cultural heritage tourism, and preserve beloved West Virginia history. Being an AmeriCorps member is neither employment or volunteering. It is a unique paid National Service opportunity similar to the Peace Corps.
“Having a full-time writer through the Preserve WV AmeriCorps program is crucial in our goal to provide Weelunk readers with well-researched content about Wheeling’s history,” said Alex Panas, Program Manager for Wheeling Heritage. “We’ve been so lucky with the AmeriCorps members who have worked with us in the past, and we can’t wait to bring another enthusiastic history buff on board.”
Along with contributing content to Weelunk, previous Wheeling Heritage AmeriCorps members have conducted surveys of our historic neighborhoods, created walking tours, and preserved cemeteries. The service term typically begins in September and works as a full-time member of the team for 12 months.
“Serving as an AmeriCorps at Wheeling Heritage has been a joy,” said Kate Wietor, Wheeling Heritage’s current AmeriCorps team member. “While a year of service is not without its challenges, the historical density of Wheeling makes it easy to write content for Weelunk. There’s always something new to uncover, and many enthusiastic residents that are happy to fill you in on the local lore.”
