Ohio County Cemeteries Foundation -  9/11 Days of Service and Remembrance

Join Us in Preserving Our History!

The Ohio County Cemeteries Foundation (OCCF) is excited to announce a series of events this summer focused on preserving and restoring historic cemeteries in our county. Kicking off in June, this initiative is made possible by a 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance grant from Volunteer West Virginia.

We need your help! Join us in addressing the urgent need to preserve these historic sites while honoring the legacies of law enforcement, firefighters, emergency services, and military personnel who have served our county and nation.

June 2024 Volunteer Opportunity

Free Cemetery Documentation and Preservation Training

  • Date: Saturday, June 1
  • Time: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
  • Location: Ohio County Public Library
  • Details: Presented by Preservation Alliance of West Virginia, the training will cover the social and cultural significance of cemeteries, research and documentation techniques, and hands-on preservation skills. It will also include a cemetery tour provided by Friends of Wheeling.

  • Notes:
    • Due to the steep terrain and poor condition of roads and pathways, this workshop may not be suitable for individuals with limited mobility.
    • Participants are required to wear closed-toed shoes and long pants, as the fieldwork will be hands-on.
    • Participants should bring their own garden gloves, sunscreen, and bug repellent.
