Downtown Development

Our work in Downtown Development helps to create a more vibrant community. As a Main Street West Virginia Community, Wheeling Heritage has created various programs and projects that focus on on business development, city planning and public art.

Empowering Entrepreneurs

CO.STARTERS  and  Show  of  Hands  are  essential  platforms  for  our  community’s  entrepreneurs.  These  programs  provide  skills  and  resources  to  small  business  owners—and  also  strengthen  the  economy  and  culturally  enrich  the  community.

Show of Hands

A community supported crowd-funding event, Show of Hands invites four presenters to share their idea for Wheeling. Then, attendees vote for their favorite project. The winner leaves with an award of at least $3,000, plus door donations, to make their idea a reality.

So far, Show of Hands has given nearly $50,000 to community leaders and entrepreneurs.

Recent winners include Sarah’s on Main, a bakery and café, and Attention to Detail, a car detailing company. Both companies used the award to expand their businesses.

Show of Hands is held three times a year. Click here to learn more and apply.

CO.STARTERS

CO.STARTERS was brought to the city through a partnership with Wheeling Heritage and RED in 2018. A nine-week program, CO.STARTERS equips entrepreneurs with the insights, relationships, and tools needed to turn business ideas into action and turn a passion into a sustainable and thriving business. So far, 21 entrepreneurs have completed the program.

CO.STARTERS is held twice a year. Applications are accepted year-round, with up to 14 people in each group. Click here to learn more and apply.

Downtown Committees

From encouraging the use and improvement of public spaces, to the beautification of downtown Wheeling, Wheeling Heritage facilitates committees of community volunteers who want to make a positive impact in their downtown.

Recent activities include the Lunchtime Live! concert series at Market Plaza as well as the mural project at Kossuth Park. If you’d like to be on a downtown committee, or you have an idea for a project you’d like to be a part of, contact Wheeling Heritage.
